چکیده

graph 5100, Micromeritics) and the specific surface area was measured by nitrogen adsorption, the BET-method (ASAP 2000, Micromeritics). The particle size distribution (PSD), a narrow or broad distribution, was determined by using the equation: PSD slope=[75% (ESD)-25% (ESD)]/2.APS, where ESD means equivalent spherical diameter and APS means average particle size. Oil absorption, packing index, colour and abrasivity determinations followed standardised methods. Both pigments and coated paper porosity were evaluated using the mercury intrusion porosimeter technique (Poresizer 5320, Micromeritics). An offset base paper (reference base) having a grammage of 100g/m2 has been used and was coated on both sides. Coating weight on each side was 15 g/m2. All coating formulations were prepared using the same additives and keeping the same processing conditions during coating and calendering. Methodology being used can be found in [1]. Several paper properties were assessed, such as: structural properties (bulk, thickness, Bendtsen air permeability, Bendtsen roughness and profilometry), optical properties (opacity, gloss and light scattering) and, finally, printing property (print gloss). Paper coating machine was an Endupap Universal Coating Machine developed by CTP (Centre Technique de l’Industrie des Papiers, Cartons et Celluloses de Grenoble). The main operative conditions were as follows: velocity 5 m/min; drying temperature 170oC; drying time 1 minute and roll coater number 0.05 graduation. Calendering conditions were: temperature 60oC; linear pressure 70 N/mm; velocity 22.9 m/min. and 1 nip calender.

Effects of coating formulation on coating thermal properties and coated paper print quality in xerography

The effects of coating formulation on thermal characteristics of coating layers (namely thermal diffusivity, specific heat capacity and heat conductivity) were systematically studied and their impact on xerography print quality was evaluated. Model coatings were prepared using ground calcium carbonate or kaolin pigment mixed with styrene butadiene latex binder in various proportions (from 6 to ...

COATING SHRINKAGE DURING EVAPORATION: observation, measurement and modelling within a network structure

Coating shrinkage upon drying is a phenomenon well known to the paper coating industry where it often causes changes in the final structure of the coating layer, leading to poor results in terms of gloss, light scattering, surface strength, coverage and printability. The aim of this paper is to improve the understanding of coating shrinkage by measuring the forces related to the capillarity, ac...

Distribution of Offset Ink Constituents in Paper Coating and Implications for Print Quality

The implications arising from the distribution of offset ink components in a paper coating structure are presented. The work focuses on two mechanisms causing differential distribution of ink constituents, namely (a) adsorption chromatography, resulting from coating pigment chemistry and morphology variables, and (b) latex-oil diffusional interaction. Adsorption chromatographic fractionation an...

Rotogravure printing is the preferred method when large print runs are required, such as for catalogues

Rotogravure printing is the preferred method when large print runs are required, such as for catalogues. Penetration of ink into the paper is not desirable as this increases the amount of ink needed to obtain a certain print density. Thus the differences in ink demand between different papers have a significant impact on the economics of the process. In order to control the ink penetration and ...

Determination of Effects of Primer Surfacer Properties on the Automotive Coating Appearances by DOE

In general, the evaluation of automotive coatings appearances favors (is considered preferentially) more than chemical and physical properties. Therefore, its improvement is most required. Studying appearance by means of QMS-BP technique, in which it measures some of the most important coating appearance factors, such as: the specular gloss, distinctness of image (DOI) and orange peel. In this ...
